Abstract
Bernoulli was born in Basel on 27 December 1654 and died there on 16 August 1705, a scion of a famous family of Swiss mathematicians. In 1687 he was appointed Professor of Mathematics in the University of Basel, and besides major contributions to probability theory he made advances in the calculus, the theory of series, and mechanics.
