Abstract

Musilová traces the development and spread of women’s suffrage demands in the Czech Republic. The issue first appeared in the Czech lands during the time that they were provinces of the Habsburg Monarchy. Women activists were concerned, foremost, with a ‘specific’ national result for the Czech women’s movement. Profound patriotic awareness, as well as an emphasis on cooperation between men and women, strongly informed the advocacy of emancipation demands. There were few attempts to internationalize the women’s movement within the Habsburg Monarchy as a result. Explanation of those ‘specificities’ to foreign activists appeared to be another problem. Instead, Czech women activists preferred to resign from representation in the international suffrage organizations to preserve their Czech nationalist focus.
