Abstract
This chapter deals with the role of identity, as a product of social or political action, in the development of the solidarity and sense of collectiveness necessary to make collective action possible. The study demonstrates how the use of banners and slogans, as tools of communication and documentation, have helped develop a Syrian revolutionary identity. In the context of the Syrian civil war, the adaptation of conflict identity theories to the Syrian case where various groups claim Syrian identity becomes crucial. Moreover, this study argues that the use of ICTs has been also a crucial factor in challenging counter-identities that different actors have tried to impose on rival rebels and in preserving a common identity among these groups.
