Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to provide an overview of the Nordic study circle tradition from a citizenship perspective, focusing on the contexts of Finland and Sweden. The chapter addresses the micro-perspective on aspects of citizenship, contextualizing this in the educational setting of study circles within popular education. The historical development is described briefly to illustrate some key features and values. This is followed by a discussion of the ideals and aims to inform the study circle tradition and then a discussion dealing with current dilemmas. The next section exemplifies the current practices and dilemmas through an analysis of three ethnographic field studies. The chapter ends with a discussion of possible solutions to the dilemmas, contrasting the notions of inclusion and excellence.
