Abstract
This editorial introduction sets out this collection’s aims and the scope of individual contributors’ chapters. The editors of Samuel Beckett and BBC Radio: A Reassessment also provide some contextual analysis of key trends forming the backdrop to this volume, including Beckett’s quasi “writer’s block” after his famous post-war “siege in the room.” Yet perhaps more consequential still is the challenge posed to radio by the rise of home television. This had dramatic effects on British radio, above all the “Third Programme,” which produced most of Beckett’s works following the landmark success of All That Fall in January 1957.
