Abstract

Based on Winnicottian theoretical postulations, the childbirth experience is not necessarily considered traumatic, and the environment plays a central role in avoiding birth trauma. Along these lines, the present research sought to discuss the environment’s importance in childbirth humanization processes. The present study’s objective was to investigate mothers’ and fathers’ perceptions as to the temporality of childbirth and the role of pain in the childbirth experience. We conducted a qualitative collective case study, analyzing 30 stories (published on personal blogs) of experiences related to pregnancy, childbirth, and parenthood, 15 of which were written by women and 15 by men. The results indicated both the importance of respect for the temporality of childbirth in reducing traumas and the central role of pain in assimilating the symbolic death inherent to the transition to parenthood. Furthermore, we observed that the care received by mothers and fathers during childbirth is essential to emotionally prepare them to care for their babies. We concluded that it is extremely important that health professionals be trained to understand the emotional aspects inherent to childbirth experiences.
