Abstract
Hybrid yarn of reinforcement and thermo-plastic fibres gives the composite manufacturing process the advantage to dispense resin transferring task. The objective of this study is to make a hybrid yarn based on hemp and polyamide 11 (PA11) fibre for composite application. The weaveability of the manufactured hybrid yarn will be checked, and the tensile and flexural properties of the manufactured composite will be evaluated. The hybrid yarn is produced using the wrapping technique where a multifilament of polyamide 11 is wrapped around a low-twisted hemp roving. This wrapped yarn is woven; then, a composite plate is produced by the thermo-compression process. Textile and mechanical properties are characterised at each production scale: yarn, fabric and composite. Results from textiles and mechanical characterisation depend on several related parameters according to each scale, to the wrapping process and weaving process as well as to the manufacturing process of composite. At composite scale, the hemp content of these composites in volume is around 45%. The tensile strength of the produced composite from Hemp/PA11 reached 64 MPa, which is 18% higher than that of hemp/PA12 composite produced in the previous study (Corbin et al. 2020b).
