Abstract
This study deals with the description of two groupers, Epinephelus bleekeri and E. erythrurus, for the first time from St. Martin’s Island, the only coral island in Bangladesh based on morphology and DNA barcoding by mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene (COI). The morphological identifying character for E. bleekeri was lower two-thirds of the caudal fin dark gray; for E. erythrurus was the irregular pale spots and blotches on the body and dorsal fin. Genetic analysis of the COI gene is also consistent with their morphological identification, such as mean intra and inter-species divergence was 0.4–0.7% and 14.3–16%, respectively. In addition, two coral-associated fish species, Diagramma pictum and Nemipterus japonicas have some morphological variations at different standard lengths. In comparison, the individuals may seem to have an interspecies relationship. The present study confirmed that the individuals have intraspecies morphological variations by COI genetic marker.
