Soil transportation assessment of an eastern Mediterranean basin in Greece using GIS techniques

Abstract

Soil transportation is a complex phenomenon and one of the most important environmental hazards, with potentially harmful consequences for humans, property, the environment and economies. Now, with climate change leading to extreme natural disasters, it is as critical as ever to probe this phenomenon in order to estimate it, which should help to prevent human losses and environmental disasters. In this research paper, we present the performance of the American revised universal soil loss equation (RUSLE) and the European erosion potential method (EPM) models for the spatially distributed assessment of the soil erosion annual rate in Sperchios River basin (2318 km2), located in eastern Central Greece, using geographic information system (GIS) techniques. Each of these methods requires a significant number of inputs that are found in data centers of ministries and institutes around the world. Furthermore, we calculated the sediment yield in the outlet of the study area and compared it to different equations found in the international literature. In addition, due to a lack of recordings and observations of complex Mediterranean basins, we estimated the sediment discharge rating curve using standard values for the parameters a and b in the outlet of the basin, thus contributing to the calculation of the magnitude of the sediment flow. The results of applying the soil erosion models indicate that there is a strong correlation between the phenomenon and the geographic location of the study area. It is also clear that the RUSLE model leads to an underestimation of the actual soil erosion and sediment discharge in the study area.
