Abstract

Mono-section members may not fulfil the structural requirements from strength or serviceability considerations. Built-up members are successful at producing sufficient resistance to high load demands, and their effectiveness is dictated mainly by the robustness of the designing and detailing of the built-up sections. The past findings on built-up beams with closed sections have been limited. This study aimed to explore the bending response of cold-formed steel (CFS) built-up beams constructed using channels that were intermediately stiffened in the web region through an experimental analysis. The built-up specimens were formed by connecting the stiffened channels in the face-to-face arrangement by overlapping the flanges over one another, thus doubling the thickness of the outermost fibers, subjected to extreme compressive stresses due to flexure. The stiffened channels were fastened by means of self-drilling screws, which were connected at the center of the flange width, along the beams’ lengths, on both the tension and compression zones. All the specimens adhered to simply supported boundary conditions. The sectional compactness of the stiffened channels and the loading pattern were varied in the specimens, and their effect on the bending response was noted. All the specimens had nearly the same cross-sectional aspect ratio. Tensile coupon tests were performed before the specimens’ bending tests were conducted to bring out the mechanical properties of the steel sheets adopted for fabricating the various specimens. Also, the test strengths were compared against the theoretical strengths that were developed using relevant European and North American Specifications. It was confirmed that both the sectional compactness as well as the loading type adopted had an influence on the bending strength of CFS built-up beams with overlapped flanges in stiffened channels. Both the design standards resulted in unconservative predictions, with the North American Specification being more unconservative.
