Abstract
Introduction
Evaluation of cervical cytology by Papanicolaou smear has assumed great importance in diagnosis of premalignant lesions of the cervix. One of the entities encountered infrequently on cervical cytology is atypical cells of glandular origin.
Materials and Method
An observational prospective study was conducted in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital over a period of 2 years, from August 2014 to August 2016. All the OPD or indoor patients who had a report of AGC-NOS Pap smear were evaluated for their socio-demographic profile and presence of risk factors. They were managed as per ASCCP guidelines. Statistical analysis was done by Chi-square test.
Result
A total of 3479 pap smears were reviewed in 2-year time period; out of which 77 (2.2%) were AGC and 24 (0.7%) smears had AGC with ASCUS. AGC was reported most commonly in perimenopausal age group (40–50 years) and was much more common in multiparous women (94%). The incidence of high-grade disease was significantly higher in women with AGC with ASCUS (37.5%) as compared to women with AGC (20%). The occurrence of cervicitis in women with AGC alone was significantly higher than those with AGC along with ASCUS.
Conclusion
AGC-NOS may represent a myriad of benign and malignant lesions and warrants a complete evaluation. Complete treatment of causative benign lesions is warranted.
