Sociodemographic Predictors of Psychiatric Disability in India

Abstract

Psychiatric illnesses constitute one of the leading causes of disability. Socio-demographic variables are expected to influence the extent of disability. However the nature and strength of this influence is not well understood, especially in Indian context. This study was conducted to examine the influence of selected sociodemographic variables on disability in persons with psychiatric disorders. We recruited 723 patients with severe mental illness from 12 community mental health clinics in a South Indian district. The Indian Disability Assessment and Evaluation Scale (IDEAS) administered to measure disability. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to examine the significant sociodemographic predictors for disability. Disability was significantly associated with gender, years of education, occupation, and duration of illness. Patients’ age and marital status were not associated with disability. Overall the model was significant at p < .001 level (F = 15.591). Results underscore sociodemographic inclusive policy and programs for persons with disability in India.
