Abstract
The steel industry generates a significant amount of waste in the form of solid, liquid, and gas pollutants. The research aims to develop a suitable process that can convert these wastes into useful resources. The study focusses on utilizing the waste generated by the sinter plant, blast furnace and steel melting shop, which are the three main components of an integrated steel plant. The waste is in the form of fine powder, which is agglomerated to form cylindrical briquettes and reduced through a direct reduced iron (DRI) route to produce metallic iron. The waste from the blast furnace contains both iron oxide and carbon, and it is found that the carbon content in the waste is more than enough to reduce the iron oxide. The laboratory trial demonstrates that more than 91% of the waste can be reduced, and more than 85% of the waste can be metallized in all three cases. Therefore, the study shows that the waste from the steel industry has the potential to replace conventional sources of iron and carbon and can be considered for further plant scale studies.
