Abstract

Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) is an economically important insect pest of many crops in India. This pest is presently controlled with conventional chemical insecticide which causes harmful effects on beneficial insects, natural enemies and environment. The present research work was planned to find an eco-friendly product from Vitex negundo to control this pest. The plant species Vitex negundo L. was selected due to its local occurrence. Leaves of V. negundo were extracted in polar and non-polar solvents such as methanol, hexane and ethyl acetate for obtaining crude extracts. The efficacy of crude extracts of V. negundo. was evaluated against second instar larvae of H. armigera under laboratory conditions. The LC50 value for second instar larvae was obtained as 4.03, 4.05 and 5.02 percent after 3-d treatment in ethyl acetate, hexane and methanol extracts, respectively. This suggested that both polar and non-polar compounds could be active in plant. Feeding activity was decreased notably when fed on cabbage leaves that were treated with various concentrations of V. negundo extracts. The same trend was also observed in the development stages of larvae. The reduction in egg laying was recorded highest (52.35%) at 5.0% concentration of methanol extract of V. negundo. A significant effect of crude extracts on fertility of eggs was observed in ethyl acetate extract. Oviposition deterrence was also observed in adult females.
