Abstract

The hydro-distilled essential oil of the leaves of Zanthoxylum ovalifolium has been analyzed by gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The oil constituents were identified according to their mass spectra and their relative retention indices determined on a non-polar stationary phase capillary column. β-Pinene (72.3 %) and 2,4,6-trimethoxy-styrene (17.7 %) were identified as the major compounds among twenty-seven constituents representing 97.7 % of the total oil. The oil was found rich in monoterpene hydrocarbons (74.6 %), followed by phenyl derivatives (17.9 %), sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (3.2 %), oxygenated sesquiterpenes (1.6 %) and oxygenated monoterpenes (0.4 %). A new chemotype 2,4,6-trimethoxy-styrene has been reporting for the first time in this plant.
