Abstract
Background
With the increasing use of imaging methods, there has been an increase in the number of patients diagnosed with gallbladder polyp. In patients undergoing cholecystectomy due to gallbladder polyp, malignancy may be observed. The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate patients who had undergone cholecystectomy due to gallbladder polyp in our clinic and the factors affecting malignancy.
Methods
The study included 48 patients who underwent cholecystectomy for gallbladder polyp between January 2010 and December 2018. The patients were examined in two groups as benign and malignant groups according to the histopathology. The groups were compared according to age, gender, polyp size, number of polyps, presence of gallstones, presence of cholecystitis and HbsAg results.
Results
Cholecystectomy was applied because of gallbladder polyp to 1.76% of all the cholecystectomy cases in the defined period. The malignant group comprised of 8 patients and the benign group, 40 patients. In univariate analysis, statistically significant differences were determined between the groups in respect of age (p = 0.001) and polyp size (p = 0.041). A statistically significant difference was determined in multivariate logistic regression analysis in respect of age (p = 0.039) and there was no difference in polyp size (p>0,05). The cut-off value for age was found to be 69.5 years.
Conclusions
The risk of malignancy of gallbladder polyp increases in patients ≥70 years
