Abstract
The use of irrigation in Roman times has been analysed in different parts of the Empire and evidence for irrigation has been found in Rome and other cities in Italy, France, North Africa and the Near East. Although there is increasing archaeological evidence for the use of irrigation in the Iberian Peninsula during the Roman period, the full extent of irrigation in Hispania is only now coming to be appreciated, as a result of work like Beltran Lloris on the Lex Rivi Hiberiensis irrigation inscription. This paper will focus on one particular phenomenon that can be used to prove the use of this practice in these western provinces, the extra urbem use (use outside cities) of the water from urban aqueducts.

Notes
See Beltrán and Willi (2011) to find a general reflection about irrigation and a revision of archaeological remains related to irrigation in Roman Hispania.
A reference for the extra mural use of the aqueducts of Rome, cf. Thomas and Wilson (1994).
Frontinus, in his Aquaeductu urbis Romae, revised the volume of water carried by each aqueduct of Rome. He drew the picture with the total volumes of the collection systems, and the water supplied by each aqueduct outside and inside the city (Aq. 78–86). So the text is a very important piece of evidence for the extra mural deliveries, even if he did not specify the uses of this water.
Calculations were made according to the two more common formulas in studies about old channel volumes, the Bazin and Manning ones, and using in both cases extreme roughness coefficients established by the comparison of Almuñécar channel features with those of other ancient channels. The coefficient used for the calculations were: y = 0.16 and y = 0.46 for the Bazin formula, and n = 0.010 and n = 0.025, for the Manning formula.
The ignorance about the wet section forced us to make the calculations for different heights, between 10 and 90 cm. From 90 cm the channel would start working in a pressure system.
This channel could not be found during the survey.
One of these reservoirs is an apsed structure (15 × 4 m and 1.35 cm depth). Archaeologists have proposed a minimum of 70 × 5 m for the other one (Moreno Rosa and Pizarro Berengena 2010, pp. 168–169).
García Merino proposes that the water carried by the aqueduct was use in different villae, within them Tejera de la Zamora, Urrea and Finca del Pintor in Osma, el Quemao and Camino de Sotos in Barcebalejo, Fuente del pobre in Berzosa and Los Villares in Santervás del Burgo (García Merino 2007, p. 225).
The possible contemporariness between the main channel and the branch line has been found on the sighting of the inside of the channel during the survey. An archaeological excavation is needed to confirm this hypothesis.
