Abstract

Summary

Paget’s disease of the breast (PDB) is a rare breast neoplasm that presents as eczematous changes near the nipple that is often associated with underlying malignancy.

Recent Findings

The pathogenesis of Paget’s disease of the breast is debated to either originate from malignant ductal epithelial cells, transformation in situ, or both. Tissue biopsy is the hallmark for diagnosis in order to avoid misdiagnosis and ensure prompt treatment. Imaging modalities such as mammogram, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging are used to ascertain if there is a concurrent underlying carcinoma. Treatment options resemble that of an invasive breast cancer and consist of mastectomy or breast conservation therapy including central segmentectomy with radiation therapy.

Purpose of Review

This review will discuss the epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and the various available treatment modalities. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of this rare entity in order to better recognize and clinically manage it.
