Abstract
Groundwater is the major available water resources in Jilin City, China, but rapid urbanization has adversely affected it in recent years. Groundwater quality is deteriorating, especially in relation to nitrate contamination. In this study, groundwater samples were analyzed for nitrate concentration and its spatial distribution using Geographic Information System (GIS). An improved radius of influence (IROI) was established in order to evaluate the relationship between the distribution of nitrate and land use. The correlation between the nitrate concentration and land use within the IRIO was evaluated using Kendall’s tau (τ) analysis. The nitrate concentration is high. It has an obvious spatial zoning character and it mainly occurs in the northwest of JiangBei district, north of HaDaWan district, ZhongXin district, ChuanYing district, and south of JiangNan district. The IRIO is 500 m. The results of Kendall’s tau (τ) show that the nitrate contamination has a good correlation with land use. Conventional industrial areas, transportation facilities areas, residential and commercial areas, and grass land and managed green areas greatly influence the distribution of the nitrate contamination.
