Abstract
Purpose of Review
To study the prevalence of onychomycosis in patients with psoriasis. Fifty patients older than 18 years diagnosed with psoriasis were included. Direct examination with KOH and mycological culture were performed to diagnose onychomycosis.
Recent Findings
Nails with alterations caused by psoriasis may be vulnerable to onychomycosis since clinical abnormalities such as onycholysis and hyperkeratosis are factors that disrupt this barrier and predispose to nail invasion. It has been reported that the prevalence of onychomycosis in patients with psoriasis varies from 4.6 to 63.1%.
Summary
We found nail changes in 90% of patients; subungual hyperkeratosis alteration was predominant. Prevalence of onychomycosis was 38%, predominating the total dystrophic presentation and male gender, age from 51 to 60 and 61 to 70 years; significant association with nail alteration was found (p = 0.0200). Trichophyton rubrum and Trichosporon sp. were the most isolated fungi. It is important to study this correlation, since onychomycosis can be a source of dissemination to the skin or other areas, as well as generate cosmetic problems and functional impairment.
