Optogenetics is an efficient method for controlling cellular processes in living organisms by light and a promising tool for biotechnology. Optogenetic switches can regulate the production of recombinant proteins or entire biosynthetic pathways in a reversible, time- and dose-dependent manner without influencing the cultivation condition. By combining light-driven regulation of native and heterologous genes, the growth and production phases of cells can be decoupled, maximizing product yield.
