Abstract
Nanobodies represent the variable domains of heavy-chain-only antibodies and possess the potential to surmount several shortcomings of conventional antibodies. Due to their exceptionally small size, structure, solubility, robust stability, high antigen-binding affinity, and ease of recombinant manipulation and expression, they are not only well suited for biomedical applications, but also provide sophisticated tools for basic research in molecular biology. Here, we discuss applications based on engineered and derivatized nanobodies as tools to systematically study biological processes in the cell.
