Abstract
Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells are the workhorse for industrial production of biotherapeutics, like monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). They are derived from ovarian tissue and therefore not specialized for the production of therapeutic mAbs. Contrastingly, plasma cells of the immune system are evolutionary specialized for high-end mAb synthesis. Taking nature as blueprint, we compared naturally specialized plasma cells to CHO cells, by big-data omic analyses, to improve industrial CHO cells.
