Abstract
The cyclic purine nucleotides cAMP and cGMP are established second messengers. In contrast, the existence of the cyclic pyrimidine nucleotides cCMP and cUMP has been controversially discussed for decades. Meanwhile, cCMP and cUMP have been identified and quantitated by mass spectrometry, resulting in the classification of the pyrimidine nucleotides as second messengers. Current research focuses on the elucidation of the physiological roles of cCMP and cUMP. Therapeutic applications are emerging.
