Abstract
Introduction
Obesity is a metabolic disease defined as the excess amount of adipose tissue in the body. Due to its increasing prevalence in children, adolescents, and adults all over the world, and that it can cause concomitant hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancers; it has become a global health problem.
Patients and Methods
Among the 48 patients who underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) between 2017 and 2022, 35 patients with a follow-up period of 3 years and whose results could be reached were included in the study. The patients were in the 13–18 age range. Long-term postoperative complications; and changes in parameters such as iron, vitamin B12, and vitamin D levels were evaluated. In addition, comorbid conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, musculoskeletal system problems, and postoperative remission rates were also evaluated.
Results
The mean body mass index (BMI, kg/m2) was 44.3 kg/m2 and 26.4 kg/m2 at baseline and follow-up, respectively. Changes in biochemical parameters in the postoperative period were observed as vitamin B12 deficiency in 25.7%, vitamin D deficiency in 37.1%, iron deficiency in 34.3%, and folic acid deficiency in 8.6% of the patients.
Conclusion
In conclusion, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) which has a low complication rate can be preferred in morbidly obese adolescents. Significant reductions in the mean body mass index (BMI) are observed approximately 3 years after bariatric surgery. It should also be considered that especially iron deficiency anemia may develop in the follow-ups after bariatric surgery.
