Abstract
Gestational gigantomastia (GG) is a rare condition characterized by excessive breast enlargement during pregnancy. Reported incidence ranges from 1 in 28, 000 to 1 in 100, 000 pregnancies worldwide. The etiology of the disease is not yet established, with theories ranging from hormonal imbalances, unregulated immune responses, to hypersensitivity. In this article, we report an extreme case of GG in a 29-year-old pregnant Chinese woman with a total breast weight of 13 kg. There is no laboratory analysis that reveals the cause of this enormous breast enlargement. The severity of the problem is further emphasized by the patient’s breathing and walking problems. Finally, the case was successfully treated by bilateral mastectomies with the free areola–nipple complex graft implantation, followed by two-stage breast reconstruction. The surgery was successful, and the patient had an excellent post-operation recovery course. And this article provides a rare case report and discussion about the surgical approach.
