Abstract

Traditional commercial anthraquinone dyes and azo blue disperse dyes generally have high solubility in decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) non-aqueous media dyeing system, which leads to low dyeing uptake. One way to improve dyeing uptake is by adjusting the molecular structure of the dyes to change their solubility. Herein, the dyeing properties of two disperse dyes with N-acetoxyethyl group were compared with commercial dye C.I. Disperse Blue 257 (B257) in D5 non-aqueous medium. Their visible absorption performances were evaluated in DMF and further analyzed using the density functional theory (DFT) method. The dyeing performance was investigated by comparing the solubility, dyeing uptake, K/S value, building-up property, leveling performance, and color-fastness. The results showed that the dyes with bis-N-acetoxyethyl groups exhibited lower solubility than that of B257 with bis-N-methoxyethyl groups in the non-aqueous media system, resulting in increased dye adsorption on polyester fibers and high dyeing uptake. Moreover, the fabrics showed high color strength, good levelness, and better washing and rubbing fastness properties due to the introduction of bis-N-acetoxyethyl groups. DFT results revealed the differences in spectral performance and solubility of dyes from the molecular level, which corresponded well with the experimental data. Overall, this research provides valuable insights to design and optimize the disperse dyes for polyester dyeing in the D5 non-aqueous medium.
