Abstract
Although parental emotion expressivity has been related to children’s empathy response and Callous-Unemotional traits (CU), it remains unclear about the mechanism underlying this relation. In the present three-wave panel study (12- month time lag), 653 Chinese children (318 girls) and their mothers (mean age = 37.18, SD = 4.22) were assessed to explore the potential pathway from maternal emotional expressivity to child CU traits through parenting. Structural equation modeling showed that higher levels of maternal emotion expression led to increased authoritative parenting, which in turn to reduced CU traits in children. Furthermore, we found that maternal emotion suppression did not predict child CU traits directly, but that maternal authoritarian parenting style mediated the relationship between maternal emotion suppression and child CU traits. Overall, our study contributes to the existing literature that mothers with more emotional expression and authoritative parenting styles may protect children from developing CU traits.
