Kapil Hari Paranjape is a Professor of mathematics at IISER Mohali. He spent several enjoyable years studying geometry at TIFR Mumbai, ISI Bangalore and IMSc Chennai before moving to IISER Mohali in 2009 to spread the joy (and occasional pain) of learning mathematics to other students. Prof. S. Ramanan, whose article also appears in this issue, is his PhD advisor, and so Kapil is a “grand-student” of Professor M. S. Narasimhan. Like many other algebraic geometers, he owes an enormous debt of gratitude to Narasimhan and Seshadri for the tree of algebraic geometry that they nurtured, first at TIFR and then in other places where it took root around the country and elsewhere.
