Strong Anisotropic Effects of p-Type Bi2Te3 Element on the Bi2Te3/Sn Interfacial Reactions

Abstract

The p-type Bi2Te3 thermoelectric materials made by zone-melting method exhibit high anisotropy in the mechanical/thermoelectric properties due to unidirectional crystal growth. This unidirectional crystal structure also has a strong effect on the Sn/p-Bi2Te3 interfacial reactions. Stripe-like Sn3Sb2 phase precipitated in the SnTe phase in a direction approximately perpendicular or parallel to the Sn/p-Bi2Te3 interface depending upon the p-Bi2Te3 crystal orientation. Such anisotropic growth behavior of the Sn3Sb2 phase significantly affected the SnTe phase growth.
