Abstract
Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a devastating complication following total hip replacement (THR). Management of PJI depends upon proper diagnosis and correct treatment, both of which are challenging conditions. Yet in the absence of a true gold standard, diagnosis is the result of a combination of clinical suspicion, serological tests and culture results. Treatment options include irrigation and debridement (\(I\&D\)) with retention of implants for acute infections and exchange arthroplasty either as a 1-stage or 2-stage procedure for late infections. A multidisciplinary team approach is necessary in the treatment of patients with PJI.
