Treatment of femoral shaft fractures with external fixation

Abstract

Conversion of temporary external fixation to an intramedullary nailing within the first two weeks after femoral shaft fracture is a standard practice. However, in large parts of the world, external fixation of femoral shaft fractures is often the definitive treatment. Satisfactory results can be obtained through definitive external fixation of femoral shaft fractures. Pin tract infections, in spite of being a common occurrence, are not a major problem and may be treated by local wound care and antibiotic therapy. The most common problem is a significant decrease in the range of motion of the knee.
