Abstract
Internet gaming disorder (IGD) has become a serious social problem around the world. Abundant empirical research has indicated many reasons to explain this phenomenon. However, little research has explored the influence of family dysfunction on IGD and the potential mediating mechanisms underlying this relationship. By constructing a moderated serial mediation model, the present study investigated the relationship between family dysfunction and IGD, as well as the mediating effects of self-esteem and self-control and the moderating role of parent–child relationship. A sample of 1255 adolescents (Mage = 15.55, SD = 1.57, 527 boys) were recruited from seven schools in Chongqing and Hubei, Southern China. Results generally confirmed the hypothesized model and suggested that family dysfunction could significantly predict adolescents’ IGD directly or via self-control and the serial pathway from self-esteem to self-control indirectly. Additionally, the moderating effect of parent–child relationship and gender differences were also revealed in the model. These findings may provide some guidance for the intervention to reduce IGD among adolescents.
