Determination of Coefficient of Viscosity in Frozen Soil Using Static Penetration Test

  • Published:
Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering Aims and scope

A method for determining the coefficient of viscosity based on the field tests of frozen clay soils by static penetration test in quasi-static or relaxation-creeping (with probe stabilization) modes is proposed. The method is developed on the basis of a comparative analysis of the dependence of the soil resistivity under the probe cone on the probing speed and laboratory test data for uniaxial compression. The verification of the method showed its applicability for preliminary evaluation of the coefficient of viscosity for plastic frozen clay soils.
