Effect of Polymer Matrix Stiffness on Carbon Nanotube-Reinforced Polymer Composites

  • Published:
Russian Physics Journal Aims and scope

The paper studies the nanofiller effectiveness of polymer/carbon nanotube nanocomposites produced by different methods, namely: mixing in the melt, mixing in the solution and in situ polymer matrix polymerization. It is found that the nominal elastic modulus of carbon nanotubes used as a reinforcing material of nanocomposites, does not affect their efficiency. Two testing parameters for carbon nanotubes are the polymer matrix stiffness and the content of carbon nanotube fibers in the nanocomposite. Notably, the effective elastic modulus of carbon nanotubes can be both lower and higher than its nominal value.
