Phytochemical Study of Swamp Ledum Growing in the Republic of Mari El

Pharmaceutical Chemistry Journal Aims and scope

The microelement composition in the embryozem and ash residue of swamp ledum roots in various periods of plant formation was studied using atomic absorption spectrometry. Slight variations were observed in the contents of both micro- and macroelements in the root and ash residue of the plant raw material. The macro- and microelement compositions of ash residue of swamp ledum demonstrated statistically significant differences in Mn, Ni, Co, Sb, As, and Cd contents, which was indicative of their aerotechnogenic and water migration input. In general, the studied samples showed a slight excess in heavy-metal contents relative to the standard levels regulated by Sanitary Rules and Norms (SanPiN) 2.3.2.560-96. In addition, accumulation of ascorbic acid (AA) and polyphenolic compounds was found in the flowering phase. The yield of essential oil from freshly harvested raw material reached its maximum (2% of the air-dried weight) during the fruiting period. Seasonal accumulation of AA and tannins was observed in samples taken from ecologically clean areas, reaching the maximum levels in the third decade of June. Calculated correlations between low-molecular- mass antioxidants (AA and tannins) and trace elements indicated pronounced positive correlations for Co (with AA) and for Cd and As (with tannins).
