Abstract

The process of geothermal exploitation often has a strong impact on the deformation and failure of surrounding layered rock mass, which poses a great threat to the safety of underground engineering. Thus, it is of great significance to understand the mechanical properties of layered rock mass in a coupled thermal–mechanical condition. In this paper, the high temperature triaxial compression test of layered slate was carried out. The deformation parameters, strength characteristics and failure modes of the specimens with temperature (20–150 °C) and bedding angle (0°–90°) were analyzed based on the test results. This paper assumes that the strength of the micro-element body inside a rock obeys the Weibull distribution, and that it introduces the strength criterion of the layered rock mass as the basis for the failure of the micro-element body, thereby constructing a statistical damage constitutive model for bedding slate under coupled thermal–mechanical condition. The results showed that the variation of elastic modulus of slate with temperature has different forms for different bedding angles. The initiation stresses of rock under 20 °C, 100 °C and 150 °C had an approximate W-shaped relationship with bedding angle, while the curve under 60 °C had an approximate V-shaped relationship. The constitutive model fits the stress–strain curve well, and it can reflect effectively the whole process of rock stress–strain. The research results of this paper can provide reference value for the stability evaluation of layered rock mass in geothermal mining.
