Special Features of the Effect of Flux-Free Melting on the Structure and Properties of Magnesium Alloy VMD16 in Cast Condition

  • MAGNESIUM ALLOYS

Metal Science and Heat Treatment Aims and scope

The influence of the features of flux-free melting on the structure and properties of magnesium alloy VMD16 in cast condition is studied. It is shown that the chosen protective atmospheres used in the melting lower effectively the presence of harmful impurities in the alloy and improve substantially its corrosion resistance. Independently on the melting conditions, the alloy acquires a specific phase composition. However, the flux-free melting yields a net of nanosize (less than 1 nm) zinc zirconides. The strength characteristics of the alloy in cast condition increase by 9 – 15%.
