Use of Ore-Coal Briquettes in Blast Furnaces

  • Published:
Metallurgist Aims and scope

The current state of briquetting technology in iron smelting processes is assessed. For the first time, the importance of using ore-coal briquettes for the charge in blast furnace processes as a means of reducing the total carbon consumption and emissions of CO2 is shown. The role of solid-state reduction in blast-furnace ore-coal briquettes in improving the rate of utilization of the reducing ability of CO is investigated. On the basis of the generalized practical experience, the dependence of CO utilization rate and total carbon consumption on the proportion of briquettes in the iron-bearing burden material is shown. The obtained results complement the previously proposed partial replacement of sinter with briquettes as part of the concept of the synergy of briquetting and sintering.
