Changes in the Form of the Liquid Crater with Variation of the Process Parameters in the Continuous Casting of Steel

  • Published:
Metallurgist Aims and scope

A study is made of the effect of the depth and shape of the liquid crater in a continuous-cast ingot on the parameters of the casting operation. Sensitivity functions describing the location of the phase boundary are constructed for a two-dimensional mathematical model to determine the temperature field of a wide slab. The functions are constructed with the use of Stefan conditions for an unknown boundary. Results are presented from calculation of the effect of variations in casting speed, secondary cooling, geometric parameters, and thermophysical parameters on the depth and shape of the crater.
