Influence of the Working Loads on the Corrosion Resistance of Steel of a Marine Harbor Crane

  • Published:
Materials Science Aims and scope

We simulated the in-service loading of several units of a harbor crane by the strain measurements and numerical methods and revealed an agreement between the results of estimation of the stressed state of the surface of rolled sheet obtained by different methods. For these units, we determined the impact toughness of low-carbon steel of the crane after 33 yr of operation and its polarization resistance (by the electrochemical method). We did not detect any dependence of the polarization resistance on the level of in-service stresses in the metal. However, we observed a clear correlation between the mechanical and electrochemical parameters of state of steel: the metal with lower brittle-fracture resistance is characterized by a lower polarization resistance. The correlation between these characteristics can be used for the prediction of the in-service degradation of steels of the harbor cranes.
