Oxidation-Reduction Processes on Armco Iron in Sulfide-Containing Alkaline Media

  • Published:
Materials Science Aims and scope

The oxidation-reduction reactions running on glass-graphite and Armco iron in sulfide and alkaline solutions are studied by the method of cyclic voltammetry. It is shown that, in the case of hydrogenation of the electrode, the peak of anodic oxidation of hydrogen desorbed from the metal coincides with the peak of oxidation of Armco iron to Fe(ІІ). It is also established that the rate of corrosion in Armco iron increases in the presence of triolite (FeS) on the surface by ~ 40%. At the same time, in the presence of FeS2 pyrite, it becomes almost twice lower and, in the presence of cansite (Fe9S8), it becomes ~ 3.5 times higher. The FeS2 compound decreases the overvoltage of hydrogen release on Armco iron, the Fe9S8 compound decreases this characteristic, and FeS almost does not affect its value.
