Response of portable gamma monitors for dose rate measurements under various radiation conditions

Abstract

Responses of the hand-held gamma monitors available for the ambient dose equivalent rate measurements in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FB&H) were investigated in conditions of the natural background radiation at various altitudes in the range from about 85–915 m above sea level. It was demonstrated that the increasing trend of the measured total dose rates with altitudes does not deviate significantly from the increasing trend of the Secondary cosmic radiation (SCR) reference data depending on altitudes in the range of interest. All the detection systems respond well in the presence of contamination due to point gamma sources of low activity with little contribution to the dose rate.
