A Statewide Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Network: Creating an Integrated Community Response System

Abstract

There is a significant body of research which demonstrates the long-term, negative consequences of early trauma exposure and its significant societal burden. It is imperative for communities to develop both a framework for the prevention of childhood trauma and an integrated response system that includes evidence-based, trauma-specific mental health treatment for children and families. The present paper briefly reviews the literature demonstrating the negative consequences of trauma exposure, describes the development and impact of a statewide trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy network on other child-serving systems and outlines preliminary efforts to integrate these systems into a more effective trauma informed system of care for traumatized children and their families.
