Abstract

The present work reports a simple sol–gel auto combustion route for synthesizing β-Zn3B2O6 nanoparticles using Zn(NO3)2·6H2O and H3BO3 precursors. Effect of acid type, gelling agent, and acid-to-gelling agent ratio on morphology of prepared products was well studied. Moreover, the efficiency of β-Zn3B2O6 nanoparticles as a photocatalyst for the decolorization of an azo dye (Acid Red 88; AR88) using ultraviolet irradiation was evaluated and >81% of AR88 was decolorized under UV light after 90 min. Also, the effect of particle size and morphology on the photocatalytic activity was evaluated.
