BiB3O6:Pr3+ partially crystallized glasses for second harmonic generation

Abstract

A series of praseodymium-doped BiB3O6 (with Pr3+ content 1 at.%) glass samples were prepared under conditions allowing their partial crystallization. It is well known that in pure glasses the second order optical effects like second harmonic generation (SHG) are forbidden by symmetry, however in the partially crystallized glasses during additional bicolor laser poling the SHG effects may be observed. The degree of crystallinity was measured with XRD ranges from 0 (purely amorphous glass) to 8.11 %. Photoinduced SHG was found to be dependent on the degree of crystallinity and demonstrates maximum for DC around 5 %. Similar results versus the degree of the crystallinity were obtained for linear electrooptics effect.
