Field Tests of a Traveling Wave Fault Location Service for Overhead Transmission Lines

  • Published:
Power Technology and Engineering Aims and scope

Results are presented for a system test of the traveling wave fault location system (TWFLS) on overhead power transmission lines (OPTL), which was developed jointly by JSC ENIN, Relematika LLC, and JSC R&D Center FGC EÉS. On the combined model, containing a mathematical model of an electric power system and a test station, dynamically transforming the calculated voltages into analog form, tests were conducted on the TOR 300 LOK 550 for different types of faults to various points on circuits 1 and 2 of the 330 kV Vostochnaya – Vyborg (L-416 and L-421) and 330 kV Vyborg – Kamennogorsk OPTL (L-474) of the branch of PJSC Rosseti FGC EÉS of MPN Northwest, selected as pilot projects for implementation of TWFLS. The measurement error of the distance to the fault location that was obtained is presented, and factors influencing it are examined.
