Effect of Metals in Rapeseed Oil on Fatty Acid Methyl Ester Yield

  • Published:
Fibre Chemistry Aims and scope

The effect of metals present in rapeseed oil on fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) produced by transesterification of rapessed oil triglycerides with methanol in the presence of potassium hydroxide as the catalyst is studied. Fatty acid methyl esters are synthesized under identical process conditions using various grades of rapeseed oil produced by different producers on different dates. The content of metals, viz., Na, K, Mg, and Ca, in the rapeseed oil and the synthesized fatty acid methyl ester specimens is determined using a Varian AA 240 FS atomic absorption spectrometer. It is shown that, in practice, the yield of fatty acid methyl esters obtained by using rapeseed oil with a higher content of the above metals is much less than by using the oil with a lower content of the metals.
