Abstract

Evaluating whether the changes incorporated by common-bean breeding programs were favorable to cultivation in a climate change scenario would be an unprecedented investigation. The objectives of this study were to obtain genetic gain estimates for production, phenology, and plant architecture traits, as well as to analyze whether the incorporated modifications were favorable to the cultivation of new common bean cultivars in a climate change scenario. To this end, we used the database of Value for Cultivation and Use experiments conducted by the Southern Brazilian Common-Bean Network between the years 1998 to 2021. A total of 199 common bean lines of different grain types developed by eight public research institutions were evaluated. Ten agronomic traits were determined and genetic gain was estimated by the generalized least squares method, adapted for biennia. The genetic gain obtained for grain yield was 24.77 kg ha−1 biennium−1, corresponding to an increase of 1.50% per year in the southern region of Brazil in the 2000 and 2010 s. This increase in grain yield of common bean lines was the result of longer flowering and cycle; decreased lodging and general adaptation score, which contributed to a more upright architecture; and increased mass of 100 grains and heights of insertion of the first and last pods. The changes made in production, phenology, and plant architecture traits represent the efforts of the breeding programs in developing new common bean cultivars with agronomic traits favorable to cultivation in a climate change scenario.
