Wetting of Particles Bound by an Elastic Field

Abstract

Particles deforming a soft matter medium interact through the deformation they create, like in the Cheerios effect. Bound by an elastic field, their interactions are essentially multi-body. Such particles may exhibit a liquid-gas phase separation. When the field correlation length is much larger than the size of the particles, the liquid phase is particularly sparse and compressible. Using a simple but realistic Gaussian model, we show that it behaves like a normal liquid with respect to the wetting phenomenon.
